An old man and a boy walked up a mountain together. The boy carried the wood on his back. The old man carried the fire and a knife. Halfway up, the boy asked his father where the lamb was, because they had wood and fire and nothing to burn.
The old man was Abraham, and the boy was his son Isaac. The book of Genesis tells the story in chapter 22. It says God told Abraham to take the son he loved, go to a mountain, and give him there as a burnt offering. So Abraham built an altar, laid the wood on it, tied up his son, and lifted the knife.
Then a voice called his name from the sky and told him to stop. Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush, and he offered the ram instead. The boy came down the mountain alive.
