Questions · What the Bible says

What does the Bible say about gossip?

Jesus taught that if someone wrongs you, you should go and talk to them privately first, just between the two of you, not talk about them to others. He said that if they listen, you have won back a brother. Going to the person instead of around them is the opposite of gossip.

Gossip is easy. Someone hurts us, and before we say a word to them, we have told three other people. It feels like getting support. But it usually spreads the hurt, and the person we are talking about never gets a chance to explain or make it right. Most of us have done it, and most of us have been hurt by it.

Jesus gave his followers a different way.

Go to them first

Jesus was teaching his closest followers how to live together. He knew people would hurt each other. So he told them what to do when it happened.

The Gospel of Matthew, one of the four accounts of Jesus's life, records it.

Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

Matthew 18:15 · King James Version

Found in Codex Vaticanus (about AD 325), Codex Sinaiticus (about AD 350).

Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus do not have the words "against thee." Other early copies do, so scholars are not sure which is original.

Between you and him alone. Not after telling everyone else. Not in a group chat. Go to the person, privately, first.

And notice the goal. It is not to win the argument or embarrass anyone. It is to gain your brother, to get the friendship back.

What it means for us

Gossip talks about people. Jesus asked his followers to talk to people. That takes more courage, and more love.

Here are a few ways to live that out.

Go to the person first. If someone hurt you, talk to them before anyone else.

Be honest about why you are telling it. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it only makes someone look bad.

Change the subject kindly. When others gossip, you can say, "I'd rather hear it from them," or simply talk about something else.

Speak about people as if they could hear you. It is a simple test that stops a lot of gossip.

Make things right when you slip. If you have spread something hurtful, you can apologize and set the story straight.

If you have been hurt by gossip, you are not alone, and it was not fair. And if you have spread it, there is grace for that too. The way Jesus taught is harder, but it leads somewhere better: to people being won back instead of pushed away.

One prayer each morning, in plain words.
